Scape Vessels
This work is a design-led response in clay to a vintage bottle form which has been slip cast and subjected to explorations by applying image and text in a controlled manner. These were inspired by the pā harakeke at the Ōtātara Outdoor Learning Centre which was once part of our school. The seed pods develop an almost oil slick-like sheen as they mature and it is this that I am trying to replicate in both the colour and glossiness of the glaze. I enjoy the textural contrasts of the glazed corrugations and paper-like surfaces of the unglazed ‘labels’ on the forms. These qualities refer back to the bottle’s original incarnation as well as inviting the viewer to caress them not only with their eyes but also with their hands.
